FOREST GROVE, Ore.– Two Pacific Football alums have been rewarded for their outstanding leadership and contributions to society by receiving grants from the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board to study abroad while gaining valuable experience in their field of study.
Avery Richardson ’17 and Mitchell Ulrich ’22 will travel to Central Europe in September, with Richardson heading to Germany while Ulrich his makes way to Austria.
Avery Richardson – Pacific Football (2013-16)

Richardson, who was a four-year starter at linebacker and former vice president of the Black Student Union at Pacific, has received a research grant to study in Germany. He will be examining the impact of socialization on loneliness and social isolation amongst older adults, a phenomenon that has been exacerbated by the pandemic. In Germany, one of five countries with an older-adult population greater than 20 percent, Richardson will particularly examine how serving as a volunteer affects the health of the elderly population. Richardson’s hosts in Germany will help him publish his research once his project is completed.

“Pacific definitely gave me the confidence to apply for this grant,” Richardson said. “I felt comfortable, after receiving so much help from Pacific, to get out of my comfort zone. Pacific also gave me the confidence to travel, meet new people, serve in the community, and learn more about the human experience. Without Pacific, I don’t know if I would have had this confidence.”

Richardson will also learn the German language during the program while volunteering at a local garden, which is one of his greatest passions. He will complete many different courses while traveling within Europe. After this opportunity, Richardson has aspirations to become a primary care physician and continue his public health research.

Richardson was named an All-Northwest Conference Honorable Mention following the 2014 season.

“I’d like to thank Dr. Lorely French, she helped a lot, and I don’t think I would have sought it through without her help,” Richardson said. “Dr. Principe definitely helped me as well. The football coaching staff at Pacific was very helpful, Coach (Keith) Buckley pushed me to do other things on campus and he always saw me as a leader, it was great to have someone that could see my potential.”

Richardson also has a GoFundMe page where donations to help fund his Fulbright expenses are welcome.

Mitchell Ulrich – Pacific Football (2018-21)

Ulrich was also a four-year contributor to Pacific football, making a huge impact on the offensive line for three straight seasons before suffering an injury in his senior year. He has received an opportunity through Fulbright Austria to teach English in a high school. Ulrich will engage in a short training session before he begins the school year on October 1. He graduated this spring with a degree in history, double minoring in political science and German.

“Pacific pushed me to go abroad and talked about how it can be an enriching cultural experience,” Ulrich said. “I had always wanted to study abroad, but Pacific gave me the tools to do that. I learned how to write, research, and teach; all helpful skills that I will use in this program. Pacific opens a lot of doors for young students.”

Ulrich will hope to make many connections and gain a great deal of experience in Europe before getting his master’s degree. He has aspirations to work in education or international politics after this program.

Ulrich was a three-year starter on the offensive line at Pacific.

“Football (at Pacific) really teaches you time management skills,” Ulrich said. “Learning how to be personable has been key and my experience playing football has just been invaluable. It prepared me to take risks. I find football, and sports in general, to be extremely rewarding and important.”
