The team outfitting the new Scheels location in Minot have been working diligently to ensure the store is ready for customers when it opens its doors on July 9, but they couldn’t stop themselves from giving a sneak peek.
Along with members of the media, three lucky winners of $500 Scheels gift cards got taken behind the curtain last Thursday to scope out the fresh displays and new additions to the Scheels location at Dakota Square Mall. While the project was announced over a year ago, Store Leader Talon Peters has been especially proud of the results of the push by his team to get everything done in time for the grand opening.
“I was actually talking with Steve Scheel the other day and I said, ‘If you didn’t work for Scheels, you wouldn’t even think it’s possible what we pulled off in the last 60 days,” Peters said, “Our team has been working hard.”
Through a full renovation of the former Sears space, the new Scheels covers 104,000 square feet, housing 65 specialty shops catering to sports and outdoor enthusiasts, to fans of footwear, fashion, and home decor. Scheels had previously been split between two locations at Dakota Square Mall, but now will have all departments under one roof.
The store will be supported by around 160 staff across its various departments, offering customers expert and hands-on experience with the wares on display. Having attentive and present staff is critical to the success of Scheels according to Peters, who highlighted a unique aspect of the checkout lanes in the era of labor issues and pandemic concerns.
“No self-checkout. We will man them all the time and we’ll do our best to keep it so we can get you in and out as fast and possible,” Peters said.
Shoppers will be able to get hands on testing out clubs and bows at the golf simulator and archery lane, or take a break from shopping with a stop at the in-house coffee shop or the delights of Fuzziwig’s Candy Factory. With other new additions like a Roller Ball alley and a full-fledged arcade, playing games has been a part of the job.
“It was literally a job today for somebody to put dollar bills in it and play games, so we had people fight for that job today,” Peters said.
Peters and his team will take a break for the holiday, but will be hitting the ground running to get the bugs worked out and the last products on display before Saturday. The gift card winners will also get the privilege to shop in the new store for an hour before it officially opens.
“It’s just crazy. Every day is just a battle. You come here even now and there’s a lot that needs to be done.” Peters said.
