SOMERVILLE – Naveo Credit Union’s Scholarship Committee awarded four scholarships totaling $7,500 to local students during a small ceremony held at their Somerville branch.
Scholarship recipients for the Carlos Faria & Victor Da Silva Memorial Scholarship were Daniela Almeida of Tewksbury, Samantha Forrestier of Atlanta, Ga., and Andersen Prince of Medford. The inaugural John C. Feitor Scholarship was presented to Antonio Ferreira. Scholarship recipients are anonymously selected based on factors including financial need, scholastic merit as well as community and school involvement.
Members of the Naveo Scholarship Committee presented the Carlos Faria and Victor Da Silva Memorial Scholarship winners with their certificates.
With honor, the first annual John C. Feitor Memorial Scholarship was presented by Feitor’s sons, John R. and Michael Feitor.
“At Naveo Credit Union, we regard education as being a very important contributing factor of a person’s journey to success in life. It is through a quality education that the doors of success in a person’s life will be opened by. We are very proud to contribute to this success through the Carlos Faria & Victor Da Silva Memorial Scholarship and the John C. Feitor Scholarship Awards presented by Naveo Credit Union,” said Paul Ferreira, Naveo Scholarship Committee chair.
During the ceremony, the Feitor family shared fond memories of their father, stories of his dedication to the community, higher education and the Credit Union prior to awarding the scholarship to the recipient who best embodied his inspiring traits and qualities.
“The Feitor family would like to thank Naveo Credit Union, its board members, selection committee and everyone involved with bestowing this great honor in my father’s name,” said John R. Feitor, on behalf of the Feitor Family. “If there are two values and principles my father embraced most, they were education and community service.”
Named after former board members for their dedication to education, the Carlos Faria and Victor Da Silva Memorial Scholarship Fund has been a part of the Credit Union since the 1980s.
The John C. Feitor Memorial Scholarship was launched in 2022 to honor the legacy of the longtime volunteer board member who was a strong believer of community involvement and striving for higher education.
Naveo Credit Union, formerly Cambridge Portuguese Credit Union, was incorporated on March 2, 1928 by 27 Portuguese-Americans. In 2014, the Credit Union changed its name to Naveo Credit Union to complement the changing demographics of the area by becoming an inclusive institution.
