The Watson-Brown Foundation awards scholarships to students from the Savannah River valley, where Brown grew up and spent most of his adult life.
The Watson-Brown Foundation’s main goal is to provide need-based and merit-based scholarships to students from Georgia and South Carolina who are enrolled in approved four-year colleges and universities throughout the country.
Watson-Brown Scholarships are awarded to students who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence, character, and service.
In order to be considered for the Watson-Brown Scholarship, applications are reviewed by a selection committee consisting of three members of the Watson-Brown Foundation Board of Directors.
The applicant must demonstrate financial need, good academic standing, and a commitment to community service. The selection committee will take into consideration all aspects of the applicant’s life, including extracurricular activities, community involvement, and lifetime leadership experience in addition to academic achievement.
What is the Watson-Brown Foundation?
The Watson-Brown Foundation is a national network dedicated to providing higher education students with higher education scholarships. The foundation is managed and managed by the Brown family.
The mission of the Watson-Brown Foundation is to provide higher education students with more competitive scholarships and to encourage self-discipline and excellence by making college more affordable and accessible for all.
How to get a Watson-Brown Foundation Scholarship
Students must be from one of the 18 counties mentioned below to be eligible. At the time of high school graduation, a student’s permanent address must be within the specified county area. The grant is open to current high school seniors and undergraduate students. Students must enroll in a four-year, regionally recognized, non-profit institution. Colleges and institutions accredited by one of the six regional accrediting bodies, such as SACS, are recognized by the Foundation.
Scholarship amount and Disbursement
By April 15th of each year, decision letters for all submitted applications will be sent from the Watson-Brown Foundation’s Thomson, Georgia headquarters.
A $3,000 scholarship will be delivered to the recipient’s institution or university of choice twice a year: once in the Fall semester (July) and once in the Spring semester (March) (January). Scholarship money cannot be carried over to future semesters or pooled for future use. For each qualifying semester, each grantee will be eligible for up to $3,000 in assistance.
Only authorized cost of attendance expenditures for a recipient’s first four eligible years of undergraduate education may be covered with scholarship funding. The number of eligible funding semesters provided to new grantees is decided by the applicant’s total post-secondary school years completed as of the first semester of award eligibility, as stated below:
- Eight semesters of eligibility if you have completed zero years of post-secondary education.
- Six possible semesters of eligibility after one year of post-secondary study.
- After completing two years of post-secondary study, you will be eligible for four semesters.
- Two semesters of eligibility if you have completed three years of post-secondary study.
When does my eligibility for a scholarship end?
All qualifying semesters of funding will be available to a winner for a period of five years. Following approval as a Watson-Brown Scholarship winner, this time starts with the first semester of attendance. If one of the following requirements is satisfied, the time will come to an end:
- The grantee attends college for the complete number of semesters for which he or she is eligible.
- A scholarship winner surpasses the five-year term in which they may spend their monies.
- A recipient has completed an undergraduate degree program.
Scholarship money cannot be utilized at any time when a beneficiary is enrolled in an academic institution that does not fulfill the qualifying conditions. This covers, but is not limited to, the following items:
- With the exception of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, GA, community or technical institutions are the only options.
- The six regional accrediting agencies do not accredit four-year academic schools.
- Programs that help people go from one place to another.
What You Need to Know About Renewing Your Scholarship
You agree to the following terms in order to renew your Watson-Brown Foundation Scholarship:
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
- Take a full course load (12 credit hours or the equivalent at your institution). If you intend to take less than 12 credit hours, notify the Foundation right once.
- At the conclusion of each Fall and Spring semester, fill out the Online Renewal Form and attach your transcript/grade report.
- Scholarship cheques will be sent to universities in early January (for the spring semester) and July (for the summer semester) (Fall semester).
The deadline for the Fall renewal is June 1st, and the deadline for the Spring renewal is December 31st.
If you intend to transfer schools or study abroad, please tell the Foundation office. Depending on your college’s rules, the Watson-Brown Scholarship may be used to pay for study abroad and/or other unique educational programs. The scholarship amount, however, will not be increased for these reasons.
Can I defer or Place My Scholarship on Hold?
Yes, during any period of time while they are undertaking a co-op, internship, or other comparable activity, including gap periods, recipients may choose not to receive scholarship payments. In these cases, grantees must advise the Foundation immediately of their choice, as well as record it on the Renewal Form for the applicable semester. Scholarship money will be put on “hold” for the amount of time requested, and the recipient’s scholarship eligibility end date will be changed appropriately.
How to Apply for a Watson-Brown Foundation Scholarship
To apply for the Watson-Brown Foundation scholarships, follow the steps below:
- Online Application
Fill out your application on the internet. Each phase of the program has its own set of instructions.
The application for 2022-2023 is now closed. In October 2022, applications for the Watson-Brown Scholarship for the years 2023-2024 will be available.
- Supporting Materials should be verified.
Check that you’ve posted your transcript and letter of recommendation to your online application before the deadline. Check with your counselor and/or recommender to see if the requested email was routed to their “Spam” or “Trash” bins if they have not been submitted.
- Complete Your Application
Complete all three stages of the application procedure and submit it by the deadline. Make sure you get a confirmation email after you submit your application.
The deadline for applications for 2022 is February 8, 2022.
The application must now contain all supporting documentation. While filling out your online application, you may use the information below as a guide. Please keep in mind that you may check the progress of your transcripts and letters of recommendation on your application’s webpage at any time. By selecting the “Save Draft” option at the bottom of the application, you may pause and save a draft of your application.
The online application will be used to obtain and submit all transcripts.
- Open your application by logging onto the application site. Under the “Transcript Request” box, choose “Open.”
- To begin your transcript request, please click “+New Request.” Students in high school (including dual enrollment students) will submit information from their high school counselor. Once you’ve finished, click the “Send” button to send your counselor information on how to add your transcript to your application immediately. Check with your counselor to see whether they’ve got the request since it might have ended up in their “Spam” or “Trash” bins.
Current college students should go to the Registrar’s Office on campus and get an official transcript. The transcript must then be scanned and uploaded to the application by you.
Please specify your own email address by clicking “+New Request.” To obtain instructions on how to submit your scanned transcript straight to your application, click “Send.”
The Foundation is interested in hearing what other people have to say about you. Please include one letter of reference from a teacher/professor, religious leader, coach, employer, or another person who has played a significant role in your life. It’s ideal to choose someone who knows you well and can devote time to writing a detailed letter.
- Open your application by logging onto the application site. Under the “Letter of Recommendation” section, choose “Open.”
- To begin the process of obtaining your letter of reference, please click the “+New Request” button. Once the form has opened, fill in the required fields and click the “Send” button. Your recommender will be provided instructions on how to add their letter of reference straight to your application after the request has been made.
Check with the recommender to see whether they got the request since it might have ended up in their “Spam” or “Trash” folders. On your application webpage, you may check the progress of your recommendation letter’s submission at any moment.
Attach a copy of your student’s report card. It isn’t necessary for it to be an official score statement (a screenshot is acceptable.) A copy of your standardized test score reports will be uploaded by high school students, including dual enrollment students. We accept super scores, therefore provide score reports with your greatest section scores. You are not needed to provide a copy of your SAT or ACT results if you are currently enrolled in college.
IRS FORM 1040
A copy of the first two pages of their Parent/Guardian(s)’ most recent Federal IRS Form 1040 must be submitted. The filer’s “Adjusted Gross Income” must be included on the pages (s). The form must be scanned and put into the online application immediately. Please explain why you are unable to furnish these forms in the Financial Need Statement portion of the application. In this situation, a file (e.g., a Word document indicating “will explain in Financial Need Statement”) must be submitted in lieu of the 1040. If you have any queries, you may contact the Foundation directly.
If 2021 tax forms are not available, you may submit 2020 tax forms. Please explain any substantial income changes and offer an estimate of current income when completing 2020 forms.
The essay not only exhibits your writing abilities but also your personality and other attributes that were not previously stated on the application. Beyond exam results and GPA, the essay showcases the student. You may write on any of the following themes, which are provided on the online application:
- Describe a difficult period in your life. Was your outlook on life altered as a consequence of the difficulty? How did you deal with the situation?
- Discuss a life event, experience, or accomplishment that you feel helped you prepare for college. Explain how and why you did it.
- Describe a pastime or a subject about which you are really enthusiastic. What impact do you believe it has had on your own growth or personality?
- You may choose your own topic.
- You may submit an essay that you wrote for college entrance if relevant. Make sure, however, that it is within the boundaries of our scholarship application (i.e. approximately 500 words).
Please include your complete name and the essay question number at the beginning of the paper if submitting it to the online application.
A list of extracurricular activities should be included. You may either simply submit a copy of your resume or mention activities you’ve done on the application.
