Entry Level Designer
Stayner Architects is looking for one or more designers to join our team in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Echo Park.
This is intended to be an entry-level position for a recent graduate, although some exposure to architectural practice and construction and/or a Master of Architecture degree is preferred.
We are particularly interested in design-driven candidates who represent the diversity of Southern California, who have sophisticated aesthetic sensibilities, who are collaborative, who are willing to take risks, and who possess strong communication skills. This position provides opportunities to make creative contributions, to be involved in all aspects of an integrated practice, and to grow into new opportunities and roles in a young firm.
Who we are:
Stayner Architects is an award-winning architecture practice. Our primary focus is to design for social and ecological impact around sustainable food and agriculture systems. We work exclusively for nonprofit public-benefit organizations (such as schools, arts/cultural organizations, municipalities, and social service providers), as well as business entities that share a commitment to non-extractive business models. Additionally, we do some residential work, focusing on challenging hillside sites. We typically work on ground-up construction and reuse of existing structures. This position will largely be focused on residential work, generally located on hillside sites, with additional exposure to non-residential and multifamily residential projects.
Additionally, a portion of our work is self-initiated projects: we develop, construct, and in some cases operate projects for which we are the designer, typically in the hospitality and multifamily residential markets. While our focus is on the Los Angeles region, we work throughout the American West, from Hawaii to Colorado to New Mexico.
Our office uses the following software and we expect you to have some experience in these packages or, at a minimum, an enthusiasm for learning: Revit and Rhino3D, Smartsheet (GANTT critical-path scheduling), Adobe Suite (presentations to clients), Procore (construction management software), and 3D clients visualizations using Oculus VR.
Applicants should have a B. Arch or M. Arch degree (or similar), authorization to work in the US, and 0-3 years experience in an architectural office.
We are committed to a diverse and representative studio and encourage applications from members of groups that have been under-recognized in the profession. We are an LGBT-run practice
Benefits include medical, retirement plan match, generous paid holidays and vacation. We provide a path to licensure and exposure to working with consultants, clients, and city agencies.
This position is a full-time exempt position and is employment at-will. This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the employee occupying this position. Employees will be required to perform any other job-related duties assigned by their supervisor. Stayner Architects and its associated entities are an equal opportunity employer that values diversity at all levels. All individuals, regardless of personal characteristics, are encouraged to apply. We will consider qualified applicants with criminal histories for employment in a manner consistent with the requirements of the Los Angeles Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring, Ordinance No. 184652 and the California Fair Chance Act (AB-1008).
Please submit an application consisting of a cover letter, CV, references and work samples to: [email protected]. Please also answer the following two questions: (1) Why do you believe you are a good fit with Stayner Architects? (2) What is your ideal timeline for the start of employment? Due to the volume of applications we receive for positions we are only able to respond to those qualified candidates regarding next steps.
