Bakassi Boys, the famous vigilante group has made a comeback to the South East many years after the dissolution of the group.
DailyTrust reports that the group was spotted going around in Awka, Anambra state in two vans, singing songs and sending stern warning to criminals.
According to a source who spoke to Daily Trust, the outfit came for cult groups which has turned the city into a playground.
“The boys came mainly for alleged cult groups which have taken over Awka town in recent time without any response from the Police. I think they were invited by traders.” the source said.
Ikenga Tochukwu, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, upon questioning said he hasn’t heard of the development, but he, however, admitted that the police is willing to work with any security stakeholder to ensure the safety of lives and properties.
An anonymous Senior Police Officer, who spoke to DailyTrust, said some security men are presently in the state, but refused to say if it was the government that sent them.
The source said, “That is the only thing I can tell you, for now. Let’s see how things work out in the days and weeks to come.”
Bakassi Boys were famous for carrying out jungle justice during the time they first came out.
